Joe was born in Washington D.C. and grew up in Cabin John, MD along the Potomac River. He attended George Washington University where he earned a B.S. in Environmental Science. Joe furthered his education with the American Brewer’s Guild(ABG) with a focus on Intensive Brewing Science and Engineering.
In 2009 (after he had moved to Eugene), Joe met Jeff Althouse, Oakshire’s Founder and CEO, during a tasting of Oakshire beers at a Eugene market. Highly impressed by the beers he sampled, Joe shared that he would love the opportunity to supplement his ABG coursework with some volunteer brewing at Oakshire. His passion for brewing and compassion for those around him were qualities that directly mirrored Oakshire’s values and he was soon offered a permanent position thereafter.
Both Joe’s son, Gavin, and his dog are Peruvian born; in 2013, he and his wife adventured to the high mountains of Peru in order to build a little brewery located in the Sacred Valley, on the road to Machu Picchu.
